World Cup hysteria hits the Mabinogogiblog

I notice that the Soccer World Cup is going on in South Africa.

The great advantage of football is that it can be played casually by kids in the street or on rough ground.

The disadvantages are:
  1. The goal is too small. This leads to supporter frustration with 0-0 or 1-1 draws, and the frustration leads to hooliganism (q.v.).  They need to set a second frame 1 metre outside the normal goal posts, and a ball going into that frame will lead to 0.1 of a goal. More shots on goal, more excitement, more results, less frustration.
  2. Hooliganism (see 1)
  3. Big money involved. Overpaid players, shenanigans, (see "Lord" Triesman)
The thing about South Africa is that the poor have been swept up and shipped out of thecities into settlements further from work and facilities. Not good. Also there was originally, I am told, no South African musicians for the opening ceremony. Also not good.

Having said that, I will probably watch England play, although I may instead go and stand in the middle of the A38 just to get the feel of what it will be like when Peak Oil hits.
